Basso Supports Farmers with 45Z Tax Credit

Michigan State University researcher Bruno Basso says farmers can begin preparing for the upcoming 45Z Clean Fuel Production tax credit by adopting practices that reduce carbon intensity, especially optimizing nitrogen management. At the Great Lakes Sustainable Fuel Symposium in Detroit on September 2nd, he noted that conservation practices such as no-till, reduced tillage, cover crops, and nitrification inhibitors can also improve carbon intensity scores, though some require long-term investment. Basso also emphasized that high-quality farm data will be critical for identifying opportunities to lower emissions and maximize benefits when the Treasury finalizes the 45Z regulations later this year in November.
